Capping
The most ceremonial event of Wappu takes place during the night between Wappu Eve and Wappu Day, as Tampereen Teekkarit organizes the capping of Kultakutri once again. The audience gathers in the thousands along the rapids to the grass area of Työnpuisto, turning their heads towards Konsulinsaari. There, accompanied by celebratory speeches, the Teekkari Hymn is sung at the stroke of midnight. Consequently, teekkaris put on their caps after the long winter rest, and it is time to begin celebrating Wappu Day itself. The rain of sparkling wine after the hymn is a phenomenon which has no match in the meteorological history of Pirkanmaa.
The event starts at 23:30, and we urge you to be there early. The area will be emptied at 00:15 at the latest.
To control the crowding, we advise the audience to gather up using the Lapintie side of the area. The sidewalk of Satakunnankatu bridge will be closed and the underpass should also be avoided. All participants should remember, that after the hymn you should only spray sparkling wine, and especially all staining or coloring liquids are forbidden.
Fuksi Parade
WOOP WOOP! Before getting dipped, first year teekkaris have one more quest before them; to walk with the whole year class from Amurinpuisto to Koskenranta, carrying their Härwelis. The crowd watches in awe at the madness, as a parade which draws comparisons to the Samba Carnival travels along Puutarhankatu, chanting and displaying their Härwelis. So come in droves and fill the sidewalks, and experience the synergy of technology and art and see among the first ones, which order the fuksis will get dipped this year. This carnival flush is something you don’t want to miss. The parade starts at Amurinpuisto at 12:30 and heads towards the rapids along Puutarhankatu. The best places to watch it are the sidewalks of Puutarhankatu, the open areas of Kirjastonpuisto and for example Satakunnankatu bridge, which as a great view of the Dam bridge. The Härwelis built by fuksis will be on display in Kirjastonpuisto. The parade arrives at Koskenranta at the latest at 13.
