Capping of Kultakutri statue
Welcome to celebrate the most ceremonial moment of Wappu with Tampereen Teekkarit today in Työnpuisto 30.4. from 11:30PM onwards! Not only does Vappu Day begin, but so does the cap wearing right of all Teekkaris in Tampere, so you don’t want to miss this spectacle.
To begin the capping we will hear some solemn words from Tampereen Teekkarit representatives, and the ceremony culminates at midnight, as the audience in the thousands unites in the traditional Teekkari Hymn. In the beginning of the third verse of the Hymn, the statue of Kultakutri is capped, and simultaneously all teekkaris can press their cap on their head for the first time ever or after a long winter rest.
Cap instructions: 1st verse: cap on right shoulder. 2nd verse: cap in hand, above head. 3rd verse: cap on head.
Vappu celebrations begin directly after the hymn with a spectacular rain of sparkling wine, which you should bring your own bottle for. NOTE! All coloring liquids are forbidden, in other words only normal sparkling is allowed.
Please come to Työnpuisto well in advance from the Lapintie side to avoid congestion. During the Capping, there is no passage on the Satakunnankatu bridge. The area is emptied at 12:15AM at the latest, and the underpass of Satakunnankatu should be avoided when exiting. After the capping you have a great chance to go see the Härwelis in Amurinpuisto!
Fuksi Parade
The like has not been seen in Rio de Janeiro or on Les Champs-Élysées, when the Teekkari fuksis of Tampere set foot on the Fuksi Parade on Vappu Day at 12:30PM! Now that the Dipping order has been published, it is time to choose the best place along the attached parade route and spot your own guild, friends, relatives and most intuitive Härwelis from this once-in-a-lifetime carnival!
This year’s new parade route descends in a straight line from Amurinpuisto along Puutarhakatu to Kirjastonpuisto. The Härwelis are dropped off the parade at Kirjastonpuisto, and everyone is welcome to admire them there between 1PM and 3PM! The parade continues over the Dam Bridge to Koskenranta to wait for the legendary Teekkari Dipping, which starts at 1PM.
The sounds of the parade can surely be heard on both Näsi- and Pyhäjärvi, but if you want a closer look, all sidewalks of Puutarhakatu will be available for the audience. There is a good view from Satakunnankatu Bridge to the Dam Bridge, where the parade shouts away every last decibel, although at that point Härwelis have already been left behind.
To the rapids we go!
Teekkari Dipping
It’s once again time for new teekkaris to say goodbye to their fuksi titles and rise from the Tammerkoski rapids accompanied by sparkling wine and shouts of joy. The Dipping is a unique experience for both the fuksis and the audience, and what makes it special this year is the virgin dipping of the brand new dipping baskets!
The Dipping begins with a bang at 1PM, when the top secret new baskets are revealed and christened with their new names in ceremonial fashion. The project team, wonderful singers from Teekkarikuoro and who else but Keijo Hämäläinen, the future principal of Tampere University will be dipped in the first baskets! You will never see anything like this ever again, so come and fill up Koskenranta well before 1PM!
After the basket revelation fuksis are dipped one guild at a time according to the dipping order which was published earlier. So come and enjoy the atmosphere in Koskenranta and cheer the new teekkaris on to new challenges! The Teekkari Dipping ends at 6PM at the latest.
It ain’t cold!
